- Select Start, then Run.
- Type: SYSEDIT.
- In the System Configuration Editor, select Window, then C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI.
- In the [boot] section, see if the DRIVERS= line is missing or commented out with a semicolon (;) in front of it.
The line usually reads DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL.
- Add the line to the file or restore the line by removing the semicolon (;)
- NOTE: There may be other drivers loading on this line, so do not to delete them. Make sure that the portion below of the DRIVERS= line reads exactly: DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL
- Select File, then Save.
- Select File, then Exit.
- Restart Windows.
