How to Reinstall Dial Up Networking on Win95/98

  • First go to My Computer, Dial Up Networking. Delete all the connections.
  • Go into Control Panel. Go to Add/Remove Programs. Click Windows setup. Double click Communications. Remove the tick from Dial Up Networking. Click OK. Click Apply and then OK.
  • If it asks you to restart, say NO
  • Now go to Network. If there is a network card in the computer then just remove Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial Up Adapter and TCP/IP -> Dial Up Adapter. If not, remove everything in the Network Control Panel.
  • Click OK.
  • If it doesn't ask you to restart, do so anyway.
  • Now go to Control Panel. Go to Add/Remove Programs. Click Windows setup. Double click Communications. Add the tick for Dial Up Networking. Click OK. Click Apply and then OK.
  • If it says "The file you are copying is older than the existing one. It is reccomended that you keep the existing file" click NO. Nine times out of ten it is these newer files that have caused the problem.
  • Check in Network. Make sure that only Client for Microsoft Networks, Dial Up Adapter and TCP/IP are installed. (Unless there a network card in the computer)
  • Now go back to My Computer, Dial Up Networking and recreate the connection. Make sure to enter the correct number and ensure that Log On to Network is not ticked and that the DNS server numbers are entered correctly.
