- Before you start find out the COM port the customer's modem is on using by going to Control Panel and into modems. Clicking on Diagnostics will show you which COM port their modem is installed on.
- Then, start Hyperterminal. The easiest way to do this is by going to Start, Run then type hypertrm
- Hyperterminal will prompt you to choose a name and select an icon for the connection. Call it test and press OK.
- Then you will be prompted for a phone number and area code. At the bottom of this box you will see their modem listed. Select "Direct to COMx" where x is the number of the COM port your modem is installed on. All the other fields should "grey out". Press OK.
- The next screen should be for Port Settings. The default settings are all we need. Just click OK.
- They are now in the terminal screen.
- Type at and press enter. They should now see:

- If they didn't see what they typed then type ate1 and press enter.
- Repeat the above procedure on your own machine until you are at the terminal screen exactly as the customer is.
- Get the customer to type ats0=1
- On your terminal screen type atdtxxxxxxx where xxxxxxx is the customer's number.
- When the two computers are connected go to the Transfer menu and select Send File. Send the customer a file of approximately 1MB size and watch the screen for errors.
- When the file transfer is complete disconnect by going to the Call menu and selecting Disconnect.
