For modems that support x2 only:
USR Sportster: S32=32 (disables x2)
USR Sportster: S32=34 (disables x2 and enables V.8 mode)
USR Courier: S58=1 (disables x2)
If these don't work you can try the following:

S32.5=1
For modems that support x2 and V.90
USR modems (and compatible)
x2 on, V.90 off
Sportster: S32=66
Courier: S58=32
x2 off, V.90 on
Sportster: S32=34
Courier: S58=1
Both off
Sportster: S32=98
Courier: S58=33
Both on
Sportster: S32=2 (or at&f1)
Courier: S58=0 (or at&f1)
