The first thing to remember about 56K modems is that 56K is a theoretical maximum. In the real world you will not get 56K connections.
- FCC limits all modems to 53K maximum speed.
- Only one analog-digital conversion is allowed along the route.
- Poor line quality is always a factor. Remove splitters, shorten cable etc.
- Your modem may be trying to establish an X2 or K56Flex connection before trying V.90 or may not be V90 compatible. This may cause restriction to V.34 (33.6K) connections. Use the strings for X2 and K56Flex to disable X2/K56Flex and use V90 instead.
- If the modem is a software modem (aka Winmodem/HCF/HSP/RPI etc.) and is installed on an aging, slow, or out of date computer then there may not be enough system resources to run the modem at its fastest speed.
- Remember that software modems will never be as fast or as reliable as a hardware controlled modem.
